You can program the scroll wheel on the MX5500 mouse to function as a middle button in the Logitech SetPoint Mouse and Keyboard Software.
To program the scroll wheel to function like a middle button:

Launch the Logitech SetPoint Mouse and Keyboard Software.
NOTE: If you don't have SetPoint installed, you can download it from the MX5500 Downloads Page.
Start > Programs > Logitech > Mouse and Keyboard > Mouse and Keyboard Settings

Once SetPoint opens, click the My Mouse tab at the top of the SetPoint Settings window.
NOTE: If you have more than one Logitech mouse and the MX Revolution Bluetooth isn't currently displayed, click the down-arrow icon next to the current product name and select it from the drop-down menu that displays.

In the Select Button field, choose "3. Shift Scroll Modes".

In the Select Task list, choose "Other" and then click the Select Function button next to it.

In the dialog window Select Other Task that pops up, select "Middle Button" from the drop-down menu and then click OK.

Make sure the SmartShift setting is NOT set to "Shift modes by pressing wheel," as shown below.

Click Apply and then OK to exit SetPoint.
