To troubleshoot your Logitech webcam microphone, do the following:

1. Verify that you can hear sound through your speakers
2. Test the microphone in Windows Sound Recorder
3. Verify the microphone is selected in the LWS application
4. Determine if the microphone drivers are loaded properly in Windows Device Manager

I. Verify that you can hear sound through your speakers:

First confirm that you can hear sound through your audio output device (speakers / headphones) by doing the following:

1. Play a sample .wav or .mp3 file.

   NOTE: Sample files can be found in the My Documents/My Music/Sample Music folder on your computer.

2. Be sure that your audio output device is functioning properly and is not muted on the device itself or through the Windows operating system.

3. If your computer audio is muted, un-mute by:

   1. Click on your audio icon shown above

   2. Uncheck the Mute button

      

   3. Close the Audio by clicking anywhere on your screen.

Before executing the following steps, connect your camera into an alternate USB port and make sure it is detected by the operating system. For instructions on verifying that your microphone is detected by the operating system, go to Step IV.

II. Test the microphone in Windows Sound Recorder:

NOTE: The following screenshots use the QuickCam Communicate STX as an example. Aside from specifying your Logitech webcam, the screens are otherwise as shown below.

1. Launch Windows Sound Recorder

   • Windows XP: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder
   • Windows Vista: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder
   • Windows 7: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder

2. Click the Record button and speak into the microphone of the camera. You should see the green line move, indicating the application is picking up sound.

   

3. Click the Stop button.

   

4. Click the Play button:

   

5. If there is no sound at playback, check to make sure the Logitech webcam microphone is selected.

   1. Click Edit, then Audio Properties.

      

   2. Make sure the Logitech webcam microphone is listed as the Preferred device for Sound recording

      

6. If your microphone was not listed as described above, select it from the drop-down menu and repeat Steps 2-4 to verify your microphone is working correctly.

   If the Logitech microphone is working and you are able to hear your audio recording, continue to Step III.

   If the Logitech microphone is not a selectable option, skip to Step IV.

   If the Logitech microphone is selectable but you are unable to record audio, verify that the microphone is not muted by executing the following steps:

   1. Open the "Master Volume" control panel "Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control"

      

   2. Click Options > Properties

      

   3. Under "Mixer device" select the Logitech Mic (Logitech webcam).

      

   4. Under the "Show the following volume controls" make sure there is a check mark under Capture and click OK.

      

III. Verify the microphone is selected in the Logitech webcam application:

NOTE: The following screenshots use the QuickCam Communicate STX as an example. Aside from specifying your Logitech webcam, the screens are otherwise as shown below.

1. Launch the following:

   • QuickCam software (Start > Programs > Logitech > Logitech QuickCam)
   • Logitech Webcam Software or LWS (Start > Programs > Logitech > Logitech Webcam Software > Logitech Webcam Software)

2. On the webcam software menu, click the "Change Settings" option as shown below:

       

3. Select Audio Settings:

       

4. Verify that the Logitech webcam microphone is listed in the "Select Microphone" drop down:

       

5. If the Logitech webcam microphone is not listed, click the "Audio Tuning Wizard" button and follow the steps provided.

6. Verify that the audio mute button in the webcam software menu is not engaged (as shown below):

       

7. Once completed, create a sample video recording and play back the file to verify sound is recorded.

NOTE: If your Logitech webcam microphone is functioning in the webcam software and the issue is with a 3rd party Instant Messenger application, please see the following:

If the Logitech microphone was not a selectable option in the Audio Tuning Wizard, continue to Step IV below.

IV. Determine if the microphone drivers are loaded properly in Windows Device Manager:

Windows XP users:

1. Click Start > Control Panel

2. Double click the System icon

3. Click the Hardware tab

4. Click the Device Manager button

5. Within Device Manager expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" option

6. Verify the entry for "Logitech microphone" is listed without a yellow exclamation or red x

Windows Vista users:

1. Click Start > Control Panel

2. Be sure that you are in "Classic View" this is a selectable option in the left hand upper corner

3. Double click the System icon

4. Under Task in the left hand column click the Device Manager option

5. Within Device Manager expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" option

6. Verify the entry for "Logitech microphone" is listed w/o a yellow exclamation or red x

Windows 7 users:

1. Click Start > Control Panel

2. Click "Hardware and Sound"

3. Under "Devices and Printers", click the Device Manager option

4. Within Device Manager expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" option

5. Verify the entry for "Logitech Mic" is listed w/o a yellow exclamation or red x

NOTE: If no Logitech microphone is listed or this entry displays a yellow exclamation mark or red x, you must reload the drivers. To get drivers, download and install latest version of Logitech webcam software that is compatible with your device.

Once the software / driver installation is finished, repeat Step III.
