The mm50 has an internal memory, meaning it will remember the volume settings from your last session.
Logitech recommends that you set your mm50 volume to a comfortable setting when you remove your iPod/iPhone to reduce the potential of hearing music either too loud or too soft the next time you insert your iPod or iPhone.
Logitech also recommends that you set your iPod/iPhone volume to approximately eighty percent before inserting it into the mm50 in order to ensure that you can hear your music.
