Circle2 motion sensor stops working in Apple HomeKit after a couple of da
-
Thank you Aron. I have an Apple TV model a1625 with tvOS 11.1(15j582) To give you a little bit more details of the troubleshooting scenario, this exact same behavior is shown in both circle 2 I own. First circle2 is located in the kitchen and the automation triggers all day two hue lights (one bulb and one strip). The second circle2 is located in living room and triggers three hue bulbs, only from midnight until 7am. When I notice the behavior I had the following approach to find the workaround: first disable-enable the automation, did not work. Second delete automation and create again, did not work. Then I notice the icon of the circle motion sensor shown in the home app did not react to any movements. Third action was to reset the Apple TV, did not work either. Final step I hard-reset the circle2 and everything started working again. After the last reset of the circle, it took about 24 hours to stop working again. Miguel Lira -
My configuration is very similar, I have two cameras, one in the kitchen and one in the living room, both happens the same, suddenly the homekit motion sensor stops working, it coincides that when that happens I can not activate the LED (via circle app) And I'm afraid other functions with turn off the sound do not work either. The native motion detection function keeps working.
These problems have occurred in the 2 cameras that I own with an Apple TV 4K and also with Apple TV 4 generation.

I am using a Apple iPad on 11.2.1 iOS as home hub and trying to get the Circle2 homekit motion sensor to trigger a automation but no luck yet. I signed up for Circle Safe premium and set a motion zone which triggers in the Logi App but in Homekit the motion sensor doesn't trigger and says No for motion detected. I jumped around in the zone and nothing from homekit but Logi app alert went off multiple times with right zone. I also reset the circle2 and still no motion detected in homekit.
The Logi app says my Circle2 has latest firmware also.

Thank you Aron. Hope you can find the source of the issue soon, so either you or Apple can fix it. In the meanwhile, it would be very helpful to have a “reset” command in the circle logi app, so we can apply the reset workaround in a easier way. this will be a helpful feature, specially for those of us far away from the logi camera location, or with the logi camera plugged in in a “no easy access” outlet (i.e. behind cabinet or up in the ceiling). Regards -
Here is an update and some comments about various statements or questions in the thread:
- The issue isn't hardware related. We can reproduce the bug, and the camera's motion detector is working just fine and emitting events.
- The bug _appears_ to be on Apple's side of HomeKit, but they are still investigating. Rebooting the camera incidentally fixes it because it resets the HomeKit connection on the Apple side. We were able to reproduce with just a camera and noticing that the "Motion Detected" stops flashing in the Home App. Doing a hard kill on the iOS side of the Home App causes it too work again. But you can't do this with the Apple TV when it happens.
- It doesn't effect everybody and it isn't a strict time issue. We setup some test cameras as soon as we read this thread and some of those are still emitting events correctly (now three weeks later).
- @Erick Bergquist? - Circle Safe subscriptions are not in any way tied to HomeKit. Purchasing a Circle Safe Premium (and using Zones), will not in any way effect the motion triggers that HomeKit receives. Circle Safe is all server-side processing by Logitech. HomeKit rules do not allow any server-side processing.
I encourage folks to keep posting details as they help us and Apple track down what is going on. I will post an update here if we are able to resolve this.

Hi @Aron Rosenberg?
I reported this issue back on October 17, 2017 as well (case# 06045855)... I have four Circle 2 cameras but only one is setup with HomeKit for testing. The camera appears properly as both a Camera and Motion Detector in the HomeKit app.
The camera feature shows the live video as expected; so no issue there. The Motion Detection widget also appears but I never see a "Motion Triggered" event in HomeKit and cannot use the camera to trigger a HomeKit connected light to come on.
I am receiving the motion alerts from the Logitech app for this same camera at home and when away. So the detection function is working but not triggering a HomeKit event.
[UPDATED] - This is now working for me. I can't say what has changed and it was probably an Apple update that resolve my issue but I came across a discussion where @Aron Rosenberg? mentioned this article - https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204893 and also saw this YouTube review https://youtu.be/_w7jFJTnlrg

I checked and I see that 11.2.5 is now available so I will try that and see what happens. But I also saw something yesterday with regard to the Belkin Wemo sensor on CNET that makes me think they are having either the same issue or a related issue https://www.cnet.com/videos/wemos-new-homekit-bridge-says-hello-to-siri/
Apparently CNET tried to add the Wemo to homekit and it wasn't recognized in their review

Hi James3293... you probably check this already but did you update your Apple TV iOS?
My Circle 2 cameras are working properly, sending HomeKit alerts and automation triggers since the last tvOS update 11.2.1 but I noticed that there is an update available now for 11.2.5 on my Apple TV.
From my experience, these issues seem to relate more to the HomeKit Hub (Apple TV or iPad) than the Home App on our phones. Even the distance between your Circle 2 cameras and the Apple TV can impact the reliability as HomeKit is using Bluetooth (not WiFi) between devices.
I plan to switch from the Apple TV as my HomeKit Hub to the new Apple HomePod when it goes on sale January 26. Apparently, you can use both as HomeKit Hubs at the same time; one as primary (HomePod) and the other as a secondary (Apple TV). Having both devices should put every HomeKit devices within better Bluetooth range.
Hope this helps.

For what its worth. I have the same issue. Everything was fine until i upgraded to iOS 11.2.5 and HomeKit notifications then stopped on both my iphone and iPad. The upgrade has trashed the functionality. I have rebooted the camera but still not working. I will upgrade the Apple tvOS and report back

Hello,
Sorry to hear that you no longer receive notifications from your Circle camera. Could you please try the following and let us know if it helps?
If none of these troubleshooting steps resolve your issue, please email innercircle@logitech.com<http://innercircle@logitech.com/> with the following information:
- The mail account and name of camera(s) not receiving the notifications.
- Explanation of when you started experiencing the problem (ex. after initial setup, after a firmware update, after an app update, after an OS update). Whether or not you receive notifications from other apps.
- Install the Circle app on another mobile device, enable Smart Alerts and let us know if they work on the second device
- Submit diagnostics (Settings > Help > Submit diagnostics).
Thank you!

About three weeks ago I have upgraded my logi cameras to the latest software 5.2.181 and this issue has improved a lot. Now the issue presents itself and few minutes latter (some times 2 minutes, some times 15) the issue disappears without any intervention from my side (no need of unplug and re-plug). Following additional information about my current setup so @Aron Rosenberg can keep up the good work: Apple TV model A1625, TvOS 11.2.6, two logi circle 2 firmware 5.2.181 placed each in different rooms, and finally I use circle 2 motion sensor to switch on hue lights. -
One of my cameras which is window mounted has been doing the motion-detection in Home app fine past few days sporadically as well. Not every time, but much more than before. I had reached out to their support earlier and was told the motion sense for homekit does not work when set up as Window mount.
One of cameras is on 5.2.181 firmware (this one) and other one inside is on firmware 5.2.146. The one on 5.2.146 keeps saying it is on current firmware. How come they are different versions but both say no firmware updates available?

Let me clarify here:
When in HomeKit mode (where no cloud connections are allowed), Circle 2 currently only uses its Passive Infrared Sensor (PIR) to trigger motion alerts. PIR is what a traditional security motion sensor uses and is based on far-infrared light wavelengths. Glass absorbs and blocks far-infrared light wavelengths, meaning that if you stick a PIR sensor behind a pane of glass it will never trigger. This is why we currently say the Window mount and HomeKit are not currently compatible with each other.
A regular Circle 2 camera with its cloud connection uses a combination of local optical (aka the regular video sensor) algorithms and machine learning in the cloud to filter the local optical motion alerts. This combination is why you don't see a large amount of false positive alerts (think tree's blowing in the wind) with Circle.
We hope to remove this restriction once we can get a pure locally running optical algorithm accurate enough to avoid the false alert problem.
-
Logi_Aaron - when you say "When in HomeKit mode (where no cloud connections are allowed)"
Does that mean...
The only data being passed to HomeKit for its "Motion Sensor" alert is the PIR data.
So just because the Logi Circle app alerts to movement, HomeKit would not necessarily be expected to alert to that same movement.
And the same in inverse... just because HomeKit alerts to movement, Logi Circle may not necessarily be expected to alert to that same movement.
?
And with that... that may also explain why cameras that are indoors appear to have more reliable HomeKit alerts, whereas cameras outside or looking through windows have spotty or no HomeKit alerts.
Is that correct?
I wish I knew this information before I made my purchase. Our goal is to be able to see, be alerted, and provide verbal feedback via the cameras. The HomeKit alerts are the only alerts that occur fast enough for the person to still be standing there to hear me speak. The Logi Circle app alerts are sometimes delayed a full 5-10 minutes after the motion was detected rendering them useless for much of our intended purpose.
-
@Laura Huber?
"The only data being passed to HomeKit for its "Motion Sensor" alert is the PIR data." - Yes this is correct.
"So just because the Logi Circle app alerts to movement, HomeKit would not necessarily be expected to alert to that same movement." - Correct, the Logi Circle app can use the combination of the local optical motion detection plus cloud filtering.
"And the same in inverse... just because HomeKit alerts to movement, Logi Circle may not necessarily be expected to alert to that same movement." - Sort of correct. Most anything that would trigger PIR will also trigger the optical detector, but the cloud side may filter out the alert as 'spam' motion based on the computer vision algorithms.
There are improvements coming in the firmware for this. We are working on getting the accuracy of the local optical detector to be good enough to allow it to be used in HomeKit instead of just PIR. This would allow use behind glass.

I've called Logitech support yesterday because I was having the same problem with the wired version. The camera or motion sensor would go offline once I left home and would never come back online. Even if I unplugged the unit. Only way was to do a manual reset on the camera. Support told me they were working on a Firmware update. ***** because until then I can't use the HomeKit features until it's released which is why I bought this camera.

@Nicholas Napoli, Do you have an Apple TV 4th gen, HomePod or iPad setup in Home Hub mode? You need one of those devices to make HomeKit work outside of your home. See https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207057 for full details. -
@Aron Rosenberg? Yes I do have the 4th gen Apple TV as a home hub. The camera will work outside my home for a minute or so. Maybe even 20 minutes. Sometimes an hour. And then go out. As I said, I've spoken with support over the phone who was unable to offer anything other than saying to wait for the firmware update that would solve the HomeKit problems. BTW: the mako8349 account is mine, but the support site logged me out after 2 seconds, and even though I had my password saved wouldn't accept it. And then I tried to recover my password. Y'all sent me a link, but thank LONG link just reroutes me to the Logo homepage. So I had to create a whole new account using my work email. Rather infuriating.
