C920 driver
AnsweredI've been using the Logitech C920 webcam since 2013 with few issues.
Yesterday, for no apparent reason, Windows 10 took it upon itself to replace the logitech driver with a generic Windows 10 UVC driver.
The following message was displayed when I ran Logitech Webcam Software:-
“You are using generic Windows (UVC) drivers, providing reduced functionality and support for your product….To get the best experience out of your webcam, please install Logitech drivers.”
Does anyone know why Windows 10 would suddenly start to do that?
The last Windows Update was KB4023057 but that was several days ago. I'm sure I've used the webcam without this problem since then.
Attempting to update the driver using Control Panel->Device Manager->Update Driver->Search Automatically did not help. It just reports that I already have the latest driver installed.
To get things back to the way they were I had to use Control Panel->Device Manager->Update Driver->Browse My Computer->Let Me Pick->'Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920'
That appears to have fixed the problem.
Before I did that I tried to find the driver on the Logitech website. It's almost impossible to locate!
Searching the website takes you to the following page, which is completely wrong.
https://support.logi.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360024849133--Downloads-HD-Pro-Webcam-C920
All that gives you is a link to download the Logitech G HUB software!
I eventually found it here:-
http://www.logitech.com/pub/video/lws/lws280.exe
Logitech need to sort out their website to make it easier to find software & drivers.

More on the C920 driver update debacle...
Today Windows 10 on my laptop decided to install the following updates:-
These updates resulted in the same problem with the Logitech driver for the C920 that I reported above for my desktop PC. i.e. the Logitech driver was uninstalled and replaced by a generic UVC driver.
This time, instead of reverting the driver manually, I decided to follow the advice that appears in the Logitech pop-up notification after the Windows update. This prompted me to uninstall the 'Logitech Webcam Software' and replace it with 'Logitech Capture'.
Logitech Capture has a completely different user interface and is missing much of the functionality in the original Logitech Webcam Software for the C920. For example you cannot adjust the white balance, there is no Motion Detection etc etc.
I ended up uninstalling Logitech Capture and reverting back to the original Webcam Software by downloading lws280.exe from Softonic:-
https://logitech-webcam-software.en.softonic.com/download
Hopefully things are now back to normal.
This is a shambles. I don't know if the issue is down to Microsoft updates or Logitech software.

So today, (30th May 2021) Windows 10 on my desktop decided to update itself to version 2004.
I had no choice in the matter. Microsoft seem to assume that because I run Windows 10, they own my computer rather than me and can do whatever they like, when they like.
Guess what? The Logitech driver for my C920 was replaced by the generic Windows UVC driver YET AGAIN!
This is becoming REALLY tedious. I have to do this after EVERY Windows 10 feature update. Either Microsoft or Logitech need to sort this out. What are the chances of that?

Incidentally, if anyone has a later model of the C920 hardware, you may find problems installing the Logitech driver 13.80.853.0 using lws280.exe.
There is a workaround explained here:-

The original ticket for this issue (#4451116, assigned to Vincent DV) is marked as 'solved'.
It has not been solved. The same problem has just happened again after another windows 10 update a couple of days ago. The culprit this time appears to be KB4023057.
Just to add to my frustration, the Windows 10 update also removed MSCVCP110.dll which is part of the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable package for Visual Studio 2012. This broke the Google Nik filters I have installed on my PC. I wish Microsoft would leave my PC alone!
