The app is required to set up your speaker, to update your speaker with necessary updates, to connect to a WiFi network, and to set up and use Amazon Alexa. If you don’t plan on using Amazon Alexa, you’ll only need the app for the initial setup, download the required software, and to perform periodic updates.
