Introduction
In order to complete some of the steps listed below, you may need to log on as administrator. If you are unsure of your system rights under Windows, please check with your administrator for more information.
In the sections of this document that require editing the Registry, Windows XP users should use REGEDIT.EXE and Windows 2000 users should use REGEDT32.EXE. You may also need to set Registry Permission's to delete some registry keys. Please refer to the information is the section called "Setting Registry Permission's" if necessary.
NOTE: This document should only be used by experienced users.
Using "Add/Remove Programs" to uninstall MouseWare
When possible, we strongly recommend that you remove MouseWare by running the Uninstall program. By doing this, you ensure all program files, Registry entries, and drivers are removed safely from the system. To access the Uninstall program, double click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon in the Windows Control Panel. Select "Logitech MouseWare" and press the "Add/Remove" button.
If you have installed an earlier, unsupported version of MouseWare into Windows XP or Windows 2000, or the uninstaller of your current version fails, we strongly recommend that you download the latest version of MouseWare. To do htis, pleae go to the Logitech Downloads page, select your product and install the relevant version of MouseWare. Then, if necessary, uninstall MouseWare using the Add/Remove Programs icon in the Windows Control Panel.
Supported MouseWare under Windows 2000 - MouseWare 9.00 or above only. (NOTE: MouseWare 9.29.3 or above for Windows 2000 Service Pack 2).
Removing Logitech program files from the system
If for some reason the MouseWare uninstaller still does not function or reports some kind of error message when launched, please use the following instructions to manually remove MouseWare from Windows. Please follow these instructions in the order they are written to avoid any error messages when restarting the system.
NOTE: This document assumes that Logitech MouseWare was installed using the default directories suggested by the MouseWare Installer.
The steps required to remove MouseWare involve deleting files that may be in use by the system. For Windows to allow the deletion of a file in use, you must first disable the file.
- Press the Control-Alt-Delete keys to bring up the "Windows Task Manager" dialogue box.
- (Windows 2000 users only.) Click the "Task Manager" button.
- Select the "Processes" tab.
- Click on "EM_EXEC.EXE" to highlight it.
- Click the "End Process" button.
- Click "Yes" when the "Task Manager Warning" appears.
- Click on the "File" menu and select "Exit Task Manager".
The next step in removing MouseWare from the system is deleting the program files in the Logitech folder.
- Locate the Logitech folder under C:\Program Files by double clicking My Computer.
- Open the Logitech folder and right click on the MouseWare folder.
- Select "Delete" from the menu.
- Click "Yes" when the "Confirm Folder Delete" box appears.
- Click "Yes" when the "MouseWare" box appears asking if you are sure you want to do this.
Setting Registry Permissions
Some of the keys in the registry cannot be removed unless you set the registry permissions. Please refer the instructions below. For addition help, please refer to the Registry Help file under the "Help" menu.
- Windows XP
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum key in the Windows Registry.
- Click on the "Enum" folder to highlight it.
- Click the "Edit" menu and select "Permissions". The Permissions property page will appear.
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Full Control" (Allow).
- Click the "Advanced" button.
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Inheritable permissions from parent".
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Replace".
- Click the "Apply" button.
- Click "Yes" when asked "Do you wish to continue?"
- Click "OK".
- Click the "OK" button on the Permissions for Emum propery page.
- Windows 2000
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum key in the Windows Registry.
- Click on the "Enum" folder to highlight it.
- Click the "Security" menu and select "Permissions". The Permissions property will appear.
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Full Control" (Allow).
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Allow inheritable permissions from parent to".
- Click the "Advanced" button. A property page named "Access control settings for Enum" will appear.
- Select "Everyone" and click "View/Edit" button.
- Place a checkmark in all the boxes in the "Allow" column.
- Click "OK".
- Place a checkmark in the box for "Reset permissions on all child objects".
- Click "Apply".
- Click "Yes" when asked "Do you wish to continue?"
- Click "Apply", then "OK" on the Permissions for Enum property page.
Removing MouseWare Registry Entries
The next step to removing MouseWare from the system is to delete the MouseWare Registry entries.
IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to solve some issues, this document makes references to editing the Windows Registry. For information about how to edit the Registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE or REGEDIT.EXE).
NOTE: For information editing the Registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" online Help topic in Registry Editor (REGEDT32.EXE or REGEDIT.EXE). Make a backup copy of the Registry before making any changes to the registry.
WARNING: Using the Registry Editor incorrectly may cause symptoms requiring a reinstallation of Windows. Logitech is not responsible for issues which may result from incorrect use of the Registry Editor. Use the Registry Editor at your own discretion. The Registry Editor should be used to remove only Registry entries for a previous Logitech pointing device. Please follow the instructions below:
- Click "Start", select "Run" and type the following in the Open line:
REGEDIT.EXE (Windows XP users)
REGEDT32.EXE (Windows 2000 users) - Open the following Registry Key:

UpperFilters:REG_MULTI_SZ: Lkbdflt2 kbdclass
- Double click on the "UpperFilters" line on the right side of the Registry editor screen to edit the entry.
- Remove the LKBDFLT2 text. Do NOT remove the KBDCLASS entry.
- Open the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
UpperFilters:REG_MULTI_SZ: Lmouflt2 mouclass
- Double click on the "UpperFilters" line on the right side of the Registry editor screen to edit the entry.
- Remove the LMOUFLT2 text. Do NOT remove the MOUCLASS entry.
After editing, both entries should appear as follows:

Removing Logitech entries in the Registry
- Remove the following registry keys from the system if they exist:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\*PNP0F03 (if you are using a Legacy BIOS)
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\ACPI\*PNP0F03 (if you are using an ACPI BIOS)
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Logitech\MouseWare
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Logitech\MouseWare
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Logitech MouseWare
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\lmouflt2
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\L8042Pr2
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LHidFlt2
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LKbdFlt2
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LCcFltr
- Remove Mouse Entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID.
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\HID key.
- Look for entries that start with VID_046d. This is the parent key.
- Click the (+) sign on the first folder that begins with VID_046d. A child key expands below.
- Click once to highlight the child key. Information about the key appears on the right side of the screen.
- Verify the Class string is "Mouse" and ClassGUID is "{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}". If so, delete the parent key.
- Repeat steps 3-6 for all parent keys that begin with VID-046d.
- Remove mouse entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB.
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB. Folder.
- Look for the entries start with VID_046d. This is the parent key.
- Click the (+) sign on the first folder that begins with VID_046d. A child key expands below.
- Click once to highlight the child key. Information about the key appears on the right side of the screen.
- Verify the Class string is "HIDClass" and ClassGUID is "{745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA}". If so, delete the parent key.
- Repeat steps 3-6 for all parent keys that begin with VID-046d.
- Remove EM_EXEC.EXE entries from the registry.
- Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\EM_EXEC.EXE key.
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key.
- Find the EM_EXEC.EXE string on the right side of the screen and delete it.
Removing Driver entries from the registry
To delete drivers from the Windows Registry, please use the following instructions, depending on your operating system.

Windows XP Users:
- Open the Registry Editor, if you closed it.
- Make sure the "My Computer" branch is highlighted.
- Go to the "Edit" menu and select "Find".
- Verify under "Look at" that the "Keys", "Values", and "Data" are all checked and "Match whole string only" is NOT checked.
- Enter "L8042" in the "Find what:" field.
- Click "Find Next" button.
- Press the "Delete" key when the Registry Editor finds an instance of "L8042".
- Click "Yes" when asked, "Are you sure you want to delete this key?"
- Go to the "Edit" menu and select "Find Next" or press the "F3" key to find the next instance of "L8042".
- Repeat steps 2-9 until the "Finished searching through the Registry" message appears.
- Repeat steps 2-10 with the following driver files. (Substitute the driver file name for L8042 in step 5.)

Windows 2000 Users:- Open the Registry Editor, if you closed it.
- Make sure using the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE branch in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine" window is highlighted.
- Go to the "View" menu and select "Find Key".
- Verify the "Match whole word only", and "Match case" are NOT checked. Under "Direction", verify "Down" has a bullet next to it.
- In the "Find what:" field, enter "L8042".
- Click "Find Next" button.
- Press the "Delete" key when the Registry Editor finds an instance of "L8042.
- Click "Yes" when the "Warning" box appears asking, "Registry Editor will delete the currently selected key and all its subkeys. Do you want to continue the operation?"
- Click the Find Next button to find the next instance of "L8042".
- Repeat steps 2-9 until the "Registry Editor cannot find the desired key" message appears.
- Repeat steps 2-10 with the following driver files. (Substitute the driver file name for L8042 in step 5.)

When you have finish searching through the Registry and deleting the Logitech mouse driver entries, exit the Registry Editor. The changes are automatically saved.
Removing the Logitech Mouse Drivers from the Windows System
The next step to remove the driver files from the system's hard drive.- Using Windows Explorer or My Computer for Windows, open the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS (Windows XP)
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS (Windows 2000) - Remove any/all of the following files (some may not be present):

Removing the Logitech INF files
The next step is to remove the Logitech "INF" files created by Windows.- Using Windows Explorer or My Computer for Windows, open the following folder:
C:\WINDOWS\INF (Windows XP)
C:\WINNT\INF (Windows 2000) - Click the View menu, arrow to "Explorer Bar", and select "Search".
- Enter OEM*.INF in the File Name field.
- Enter the following 8 character string in the "Word or phase..." or "Containing Text" field:
4D36E96F (For PS/2 Mouse/HID USB installation file)
- Click the "Search" button. Under the Search Results field, a list of files called "OEM#.INF' appear. These are INF files that reference the Logitech mouse drivers.
- Delete all the files listed.
- Repeat steps 4-6 with the following 8 character string:
745a17a0 (For USB Cordless Receiver installation file)
- Close the Windows Explorer.
Removing Logitech MouseWare from the Start Menu
The next step is to remove the Logitech program group from the Start Menu. To do this:- Click on the "Start" menu, then "Settings and Taskbar & Start Menu...". The "Taskbar & Start Menu Properties" screen should now be open.
- Click the "Start Menu" tab, then the "Customize" button. (Windows 2000 users, Click the Advanced tab, then the "Advanced" button.)
- Click on the "Customize" button.
- Click on the "Advanced" button.
- Click on the (+) sign next to "My Computer".
- Click on the plus (+) sign next to the C: drive.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to the "Program Files" folder.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to the "Logitech" folder.
- Right click on the MouseWare folder.
- Select "Delete" from the menu and confirm the folder deletion.
- Now close the "Program Files" and the "Task and Start Menu Properties" box.
Setting up default Windows Microsoft mouse drivers
After you have removed all the Logitech drivers and Registry entries, you can select the driver you wish to use as shown below, or you can restart the system and let Windows redetect your pointing device. We recommend you restart and let Windows detect your device. If, during the re-detection, you are prompted to insert a MouseWare CD, then you have not removed all the Logitech files properly. Go through the procedures listed in this document again, being careful to follow the instructions closely.If, however, you choose to manually change drivers from Logitech mouse drivers to the native Microsoft mouse drivers, follow the instructions below:
- Click "Start", "Settings", then "Control Panel".
- Double click the mouse icon.
- Select the "Hardware" tab, then click on the Properties button.
- Click on the "Driver" tab, and then click on the "Update Driver" button. The "Hardware Update Wizard should appear. (Windows 2000 users, click the Next button of the Upgrade Device Driver Wizard.)
- When asked, "What do you want the wizard to do?" click the bullet next to:
"Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" (Windows XP)
"Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver". (Windows 2000) - Click the "Next" button.
- Click the bullet next to:
"Don't search I will choose the driver to install" (Windows XP)
"Show all hardware of this device class". (Windows 2000) - Click the "Next" button.
- (Windows XP only.) Remove the checkmark from "Show compatible hardware".
- Under "Manufacturers," select "Microsoft".
- Under "Models," make the selection that matches the type of pointing device attached to your system. For any Logitech Mouse plugged into your PS/2 port or Mouse Port, select:
MICROSOFT PS/2 MOUSEFor any Logitech Mouse plugged into your Serial Port, select:MICROSOFT SERIAL MOUSEFor any Logitech Mouse plugged into your USB Port, select:HID-COMPLIANT MOUSE
- Click the "Next" button, and then click the "Yes" button of the "Update Driver Warning" box.
- Click the "Next" button, and then click the "Yes" button of the "Confirm Device Install" dialog box.
- Insert the Windows CD-ROM and click on the "OK" button, if prompted.
- Click the "Finish" button in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" dialog box.
- Click the "Close" button of the "Microsoft Mouse Properties" box.
